Biggie’s Pizza owners to buy Morning Fresh Bakeries locations

A longtime Adrian institution — not to mention a favorite spot for college students or anyone needing a late-night pick-me-up — is getting a new owner. Allen and Tiffany Heldt, the owners of Biggie’s Pizza in the Adrian Mall, are purchasing both Adrian locations of Morning Fresh Bakeries from Jerry Gallatin, who is planning to retire. The change of ownership will take place Jan. 1. “Allen will do a good job,” Gallatin said, noting Heldt’s success at keeping Biggie’s open through challenging times. Continue Reading

Adrian Mall

Announcement of new mall anchor store could be coming in a few weeks

A major announcement about a new anchor store for the Adrian Mall could be coming within a few weeks, according to a representative of the Tabani Group, the Dallas-based company that purchased the mall last winter. Michael Schackman, asset manager for the Tabani Group, addressed the Adrian Area Chamber of Commerce Adrian in the A.M. breakfast today. “Right now, we have two large anchors in the works to come to the mall,” he said, adding that he had hoped to be able to announce one of them today, but the announcement will probably be a few weeks off. Nonetheless, he said, he’s “very confident” in the deal. The Tabani Group owns a total of more than 10 million square feet of commercial, hotel and residential real estate, including nine shopping centers. Continue Reading

Second Taco Bell in Adrian

Last major obstacle to North Main Taco Bell is out of the way

The last major roadblock to a new Taco Bell restaurant on the north side of Adrian has been removed. At issue is 0.27 acre of land adjacent to Island Park that the developer, Sundance Inc., wants to buy from the city in order to get the restaurant’s entrance far away from Albert Street to avoid causing problems with that intersection. A variety of problems were discovered in the process of trying to sell the property, including a clause giving 70 percent of any mineral rights to the state, and a requirement for the city to acquire an equivalent amount of land for recreational purposes; these stemmed from the city originally using DNR funds to buy the land. For more background, see this previous story. City administrator Shane Horn said Monday that the state has cleared the mineral rights restriction, which was the last major obstacle. Continue Reading

Buffalo Wild Wings

Buffalo Wild Wings will open in a week and give 100 customers free wings for a year

The new Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant in Adrian, which is located on the south end of the Adrian Mall, is slated to open next week. The grand opening is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 17, with the doors opening at 11 a.m. The restaurant will give free wings for a year to the first 100 customers through the door on that day. Joe Chuhran, managing partner of the restaurant, said its design will be different from most other Buffalo Wild Wings locations in Michigan, in that it uses the stadium-style atmosphere employed by the chain’s newer restaurants. It will have an open appearance – you’ll be able to stand on one side of the restaurant and see across to the other – with big-screen TVs above the bar mimicking the look of a stadium Jumbotron.
